In Death Valley's Badwater Basin, encrusted salt formations create polygonal patterns which seem to stretch to the far horizon. This is a popular spot for landscape photographers, and each evening brings dozens of folks out to explore the salt flats, hoping for a golden moment like this. You have to hike a mile or two out into the basin to escape the bulk of the crowds, but even closer in, it's not hard to find your own little scene to explore.
According to one ranger we met, six miles out into the playa, the formations are nearly waist high. Now that would be a hike!
