Final Mile

On San Juan island we discovered this old Rambler station wagon moldering in the forest. What miles had it covered, what experiences had it had, what memories had it brought to the family that owned it?

My own family had a Rambler station wagon in the 1960s, and each summer my mom and dad would pile the four kids in the back and we would set out to explore the American west. Our Rambler's final trip came when we moved to Colorado, and I recall laying with my siblings on blankets in the "way back", my pet turtle sloshing next to me in a container of water.

Alas, although our family and car survived the trip, the turtle did not--soon after our arrival at our new home, the precious little pet expired.

It's funny how relics like this old car can bring back long-forgotten memories. "Jade" of the forest, I hope you brought years of happiness to some other lucky souls.
