We had just hiked to the top of the tallest dune at Mesquite Flats in Death Valley National park, hoping a glorious sunset would provide a dramatic backdrop for some dunescape photography. Unfortunately, the clouds didn't materialize, and to make matters worse, the tourist hordes had tracked up pretty much every composition I could imagine. When I saw the light recede over a neighboring dune, leaving only a brilliant string of beaded sunlight along the ridge, I new instantly this image would be a keeper.
