Of Glory Days

I love photographing old doors and windows! What stories these crumbling facades would tell, could they speak?

In Mexico's Yucatan, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, sisal production for henequen fiber to supply the agricultural, shipping and clothing industries once brought unimaginable wealth to a few families, making the Yucatan one of the richest states in the Republic of Mexico. In the 1930s, following the Great Depression--which lessened demand for exports to the US--and then the introduction of synthetic materials, the industry collapsed. In ten short years, the Yucatan went from being the richest state in Mexico to needing subsidies from the federal government. The fading colors of this old home in an otherwise non-descript little town in Mexico's Yucatan peninsula speak to the area's more glorious past.
