Volcan Masaya

Just outside Granada, Nicaragua, Volcan Masaya churns cauldron-like in the evening light. After staring down into the belly of the earth from such a close distance, we were thankful we weren't there on April 23, 2001, when an explosion of gas threw microwave-sized rocks nearly 500 meters beyond the crater rim, damaging cars and injuring one spectator.
