Frog Baby

What better portrayal could any portraitist make than to depict the bond of a child with their parent. Or the joy of a parent with a brand new, just hatched, baby. This new daddy was so very proud of this tiny baby, only a few days old. I saw this image in my head almost as soon as they entered the camera room of my studio. I knew what I had to get! Fortunately the parents had listened to me as I counseled with them before the session about their garments. I told them to wear just simple black tee shirts, plain is best. The shape and form of the infant made me think of tree frogs I had seen, and I thought it was very, very cool. I used a Hasselblad 500ELm camera and a 150mm Sonnar lens. No filtration that I recall and I don't remember what film I was using in that era. The thing I love about this style of work is that in 50 years when the baby boy shows it to his children it will still be a beautiful statement about the relationship of a newborn baby to his daddy.

A thing I harped on as I taught portrait work is that in order to create really timeless and elegant portraits you have to master and understand light; what it does and how it works.
