I was driving to Montana early one June and my path took me through the Snowy Mountains in the Medicine Bow of Wyoming. This spot has been a favorite of mine for a number of years, and I have hiked several trails there. I truly believe these are the most beautiful mountains in North America. When I went this time they were still before ice out, although the snow had begun clearing and the ice was melted in a few places. Still, even though it was still frozen, care had to be exercised because it would be quite easy to step in the wrong spot and go through the ice - which would be a completely disastrous occurrence. I was driving into a huge rainstorm. In fact when I got to Saratoga, where I would spend the night, the North Platte River was out of its banks and we were in danger of being flooded. Altogether gorgeous place to be.
