Towers Along the Gila

"Towers Along the Gila". A friend and I had gone to the Gila to make photographs. One of the things that was most memorable to me about the trip was how freaking cold it was. One of those nights where you pray for morning just so you can get warmed back up. Who would have thought that it would be that cold in New Mexico? This image was done the first afternoon that I was in the area, just before civil sundown. I have lived in New Mexico now for more than 50 years and had never gone into this area. The Gila, as it is called, was the first National Wilderness Area in the US. I used a Toyo 45A Field Camera, a Schneider 47XL lens with a #25 Dark Red filter and Kodak T-Max 100 film. BTW, the rock structure is called the Gila Conglomerate and is, apparently, very porous with a lot of limestone in it, so there are numerous caves throughout the area.

Nathan, classic exposure of highlights and unique exposure of the shadows. Well done!
As to cold desert nights I've seen my share too! And can't figure I'm pretty sure it has to do with the lack of humidity but it seems much colder than even lower temps in the high country in the west!?
