I was driving to Montana to teach a workshop for the Photographers Formulary in Condon, Montana and made several side trips in the process. I had learned of the De Voto Grove of Giant Cedars some years before, and realizing that it was just a few miles off my chosen route, decided to pay a visit. Redwoods and Sequoia aren't the only places in the west with giant trees. Northern Idaho has several groves of giant trees as well. As I drove down Lolo Pass I began to see very large trees, and when I got to the DeVoto trailhead turn out, and pulled over, this huge tree was the very first thing that caught my eye. I knew what the composition would be almost immediately. Waiting for the mountain breeze to attenuate was an exercise in futility and frustration, and even the slightest puff of moving air would send the tips of the branches into frantic motion. I finally resolved to get what I could get, since I was fairly sure this would be my only visit to the area. I used my Toyo 45A camera, 210mm Rodenstock Sironar-S lens and Kodak T-Max 100.
