Gnarled Tangled Guardian

We return to the enchanting forests of Euskadi, places that feel almost magical in their beauty and atmosphere.

That morning, we ventured through the Opakua woods and came across this twisted, gnarly tree along the path. It immediately sparked my imagination, and I borrowed Laura's TTArtisan 11mm F2.8 Fisheye lens to emphasize the warped shape of the tree even more.

I wanted to highlight the vibrant autumn leaves that had recently fallen onto the lush green moss carpeting the forest floor. The striking contrast between the warm colors of the leaves and the deep greens of the moss created a fascinating foreground.

This composition leads the eye from those scattered leaves in the foreground, along the gnarled roots, up the tree trunk, and finally to its sprawling branches and canopy.

As I framed the shot, I couldn’t help but think of the Ents from The Lord of the Rings. Those giant and ancient guardians of the forest who seem to wake and speak if you linger long enough.
