How to Look Like A True Pro Photographer

The guys at DigitalRev are at it again! They've created this video about how one is guaranteed to look like a true pro photographer. A lot of it is meant to be silly and humorous, but there are actually a couple of tips in there that will actually help you be a better photographer.

Amazon's Newest, Revolutionary Patent: White Seamless Studio Photography

Brought to our attention by Photography Bay, Amazon has patented a most ingenious invention: a completely revolutionary way to get a "true white" background on an image in-camera, without any post processing. We didn't understand how it was done, but now the US Patent Office has helped us all by posting this granted patent complete with plenty of diagrams supplied by Amazon's brilliant inventors.

The Future: WALLEY POS-86 is Redefining What Cameras Can Be

It seems that anyone can make a camera, but it takes a true visionary to craft a truly excellent camera. It's not the camera we want, but the camera we need. the WALLEY POS-86 is that camera, and it's going to redefine what we think of cinematography from this point forward. 16-bit RAW processing, 3D capabilities, beautiful on-camera light built-in, and all in a compact and well-built ergonomic design.

How to Maintain Perfect Lighting for a Moving Vehicle Set

One of the hardest parts of filming on moving sets such as moving cars or trains is to maintain perfect lighting in a way that makes sense to the viewer. There are many obstacles the filmmakers have to deal with when shooting on a moving set, like how to move the lights while keeping it on the same angle while the vehicle is moving and how to keep the camera shot steady and focused on the subject. Check out this great BTS video showing how filmmakers in China solved these problems.

The Most Motivational Thing I've Ever Heard

Although it would seem like common sense, proper motivation is key toward not only getting things done, but getting things done well. This is true in any creative field and this is especially true, it seems, in the over-saturated everybody-with-a-camera-is-a-photographer world we live in.

Check Out This Hilarious Photography Workshop From 1961

We posted a set of videos released by Pathé News, part of their 85,000 reels released, but this one really stood out to me- it's hilarious. I'll add that I've taught and taken quite a few photo workshops in my day, but I would kill to know what that instructor was saying to his students and the models. Let's break this video down shall we?

How To Make A Sick Mountain Bike Edit

While browsing the web for editing tips, I ran across this video tutorial that had me intrigued based on the title "How To Make A Sick Mountain Bike Edit." I normally don't watch mountain bike videos, but this one had me from the beginning.

Deke's Techniques Shares a Photoshop Workflow... For Version 1.0

Every year the photo community is besieged by April Fool’s Day jokes. This year's batch included a fake Canon 1D-W, a 15-foot tripod, and BorrowLenses adding a “rent an intern” option. This workflow serves as a tongue-in-cheek reminder of just how far our editing software has come since its release in February, 1990. Photoshop 1.0 was Mac-exclusive, only allowed one "undo", and even pre-dates the .jpg file.

"Duluth Typologies": Series Alters Perception with Angle

While Minneapolis-based photographer Cameron Wittig is probably best known for his intriguing portraits of musicians like Haley Bonar and Andrew Bird, I discovered him through his humorous project, “Duluth Typologies”. The series features houses built on steep hills in the small town of Duluth, Minnesota. Using a simple adjustment of angle, the houses in “Duluth Typologies” appear to be sliding into the flat ground beneath them, creating a humorous commentary on the potential of imagery to lie.

The Best Of This Year's Fine Art Photography (NSFW)

This year has proven to be more scandolous than provocative in the fine art photography circuit. More and more photographers are coming to the realization that the same stuff doesn't sell and the proverbial bar must be raised with every shoot. The photos below are probably the most extreme examples of this new wave of photographers resorting to such fine art methods in posing, makeup, and subject matter. NSFW

Tips To Avoid Creative Burnout

It’s no secret that everyone can become burnt out on what they do. Whether we are photographers, athletes, truck drivers, or teachers. If we do something long enough, maybe unless you’re a fighter pilot, professional surfer, and/or an astronaut, almost everyone will experience a period of time in their career when they’re flat-out bored and/or they suddenly arrive at a place where they question both their work and if what they’re doing is really what they should be doing.

Sara Lando and Zack Arias Throw Down in the GPP2014 ShootOut

I know, I know. My post last Sunday also featured Zack but when you put yourself out there as much as he does, you're going to get noticed (a lesson for us all). Besides, this isn't really about him. This is about one of the greatest challenges ever conceived in the photography industry. That's right kids. It's the 2014 Gulf Photo Plus ShootOut, pitting Sara Lando against Zack Arias with cameos by some of the best shooters in the industry.

This DreamWorks Animator Is Using His VFX Skills To Turn His Son Into a Superhero

James is not one of the ordinary kids in town. James is a superhero shooting lasers from his eyes and flying around. These super powers are all possible thanks to his dad, Daniel Hashimoto, who is a DreamWorks animator and a visual effects specialist based in LA. Daniel decided to use his visual effects skills and upgrade his own home-videos of his young son James, who is now also known as "The Action Kid".

Truth In Advertising? "This Is A Generic Brand Video" Is Equally Parts Scary And Funny

Creative writer Kendra Eash wrote a painfully accurate article for Timothy McSweeney's Internet Tendencies that put into perspective what most brand and corporation videos look and sound like. Taking it to the next level, stock clip site Dissolve realized it was indeed generic, and pulled together their own stock clips cut to Kendra's writing, resulting in a hilarious edit.

Zack Arias With A Little Q&A: How To Get An Agency Meeting

Good friend (and even better photographer) Zack Arias over at DEDPXL.com just kicked out a little Q&A video on how to get your foot in advertising agencies' doors. As usual Zack delivers solid, straight forward, no-nonsense advice and as a bonus you get to meet Carl (the laconic squirrel). There's even a shout out to John Keatley from the Fstoppers' Bahamas Workshop coming up in May.

Superman Flies Through Los Angeles With A Gopro

What happens when you combine a GoPro Hero +3, a DJI Phantom II, an actor dressed as Superman, and some clever video editing? How about one awesome simulation of what it must be like to be Superman as he flies through Los Angeles. If you were upset with our recent Phantom 2 Gopro height test last week, you are definitely not going to want to watch this video. Be sure to check out Sam and Niko's behind the scenes video

Using Instagram To Stalk, Err.. Pick Up Girls? Be Careful What You Share On Social Media

I've read plenty of articles online about the sharing of user information, privacy settings on facebook, and the creepy things that someone could do with malicious intentions. In this video, Sam Pepper uses Instagram location tagging to find girls in the area, and makes them believe they know each other by sharing information they posted online.

Coke's PSA Pranks Theatergoers With Some Fast Editing

Ok, sure it's advertising but it's creative, entertaining advertising by global ad agency Saarchi & Saatchi and executive creative director Jason Mendes. Imagine going to your favorite local theater, plopping your butt down with your popped corn in one hand and coke in the other. And just as you settle in look up to find that you have become an advertising superstar.

Celebrity Photobombs Are The Photobombs You Can Only Wish For

Most photobombs we know are the ones of our drunk friend who walks in behind a group shot at a party, or of a random old lady who eats while walking when you take a selfie outside with your best friend. But what if Jimmy Fallon and Jon Hamm were the ones photobombing your shots? In one word - Awesomeness.

Van Damme Zero Gravity Splits In Space - Take that Chuck Norris

Remember when Jean-Clade Van Damme released his awesome Volvo Trucks commercial? Then, it was followed by an even more awesome Chuck Norris doing the splits between two planes video response? Yah, we do. Turns out Chuck Norris truly can be beat though!

The Awesome Robocop Retouching Contest Winners

A few weeks back, I posted a full behind the scenes blog about my Robocop photoshoot. I had such a fun time with the shoot and final images that I figured others may enjoy playing with my Phase One MF raw files as well. I posted a contest on my personal photography blog that challenged people to re-interpret Robocop using up to 8 of my supplied Phase One RAW files. There was hundreds of entries from across the globe a handful of star-studded judges to review the entries.

The Funniest Client Request I Will Have All Year. I Hope.

They are out there. Lurking in the shadows and deep recesses of the internet where common sense is not welcome and logic has yet to be invented. I am speaking of course about every small business owner’s worst nightmare. The potential client that has no potential. Nothing I had encountered before could prepare me for the hilarious email I received one fine Monday morning.

BTSV Barbie's Sports Illustrated Cover Shoot

Fashion icon, model, plaything. No matter how you see her Barbara Millicent Roberts (a.k.a. Barbie) proves that she's still got it at the age of 55 by landing the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition (technically a promotional cover-wrap for the American International Toy Fair). Even though this tongue-in-cheek video was primarily created for humorous reasons you still get a good glimpse behind the scenes with legendary photographer Walter Iooss.

Chase Jarvis Takes Kai On a 'Cheap Camera Challenge' Style Shoot

Kai of DigitalRev is known for his Cheap Camera Challenges where he gives successful photographers a cheap camera and asks them to create awesome images with it. Photo mogul Chase Jarvis decided recently to turn the tables and give his own challenge to Kai himself, and see how he can handle it. The challenge was to create one of Chase's most iconic images (originally shot with Hasselblad) with a GoPro Hero3+.

Take 2-Min and Watch The Most Exciting Wedding Video Of All Time

This morning as I was perusing through the front page of the internet, a.k.a. Reddit, I came across this 2-minute wedding video that had me laughing till my chest hurt. I couldn't help but watch it three times. The friends and family that helped plan this gypsy wedding sure know how to throw a fantastic dangerous party.

Comparing the Sensor in Nikon's Df and D4 Cameras

Lately we've been seeing a lot about the Nikon Df. Everything from Lee Morris' Nikon Df Hipster Review to Chase Jarvis' First Impressions, and it seems like the early popular opinion has judged the Df as lacking. Adding to the growing list of underwhelmed reviews is this video from DigitalRevTV as they compare how the D4 sensor performs in both the Df and D4 models.

Storm Troopers Twerk Better Than You

I would have thought the storm trooper armor would have been twerk prohibitive but I was wrong, I was very wrong. Check out the behind the scenes of the making of this video below.

The Fstoppers Nikon DF Camera Hipster Review

About two months ago, I posted a highly controversial post called The Nikon Df Represents Everything Wrong With Photography. Even though I completely stand behind my original article, I began to wonder if I had not given Nikon's newest DSLR offering a fair chance. Today I decided to take the Nikon Df out into the real world and not only test it's photographic capabilities, but also hear what normal people had to say about it.

Behind the Scenes of the Oscars (Academy Awards) Trailer

Academy Awards season is swiftly coming and to get the buzz going a little earlier the Oscars have come out with a brand new trailer with talk-show darling Ellen DeGeneres and 250 dancing extras. The trailer was directed by Paul Feig who is best known for "Bridesmaids" and "the Heat". It looks like they used an ARRI Alexa to film the trailer. It's a fun and cute glimpse into what we can look forward to at this coming year's Academy Awards show.

Knowing When To Say No - Is This Too Much Photoshop?

Long gone are the days of being pro- or anti-Photoshop. Today, it's use is ubiquitous in advertising and fashion. Rather, the discussion is now centered around how much Photoshop is appropriate, and at what point is it that something becomes "over 'shop'ed". Ad agency Victors and Spoils aptly demonstrates in this video how marketeers will stop at nothing to get the perfect message across when using Photoshop.

Filmmaker Creates Awesome Car Commercial For His Used '96 Nissan Maxima

Orlando-based Filmmaker Luke Aker recently decided to sell his old and (very) used 1996 Nissan Maxima. He knew it won't be easy to find a buyer for the car, so he used his talent and skills and created a video commercial for it. To be honest? It's way better than most car commercials on TV. "Luxury Defined".

South Park Makes Fun Of The Retouching Industry (NSFW)

South Park is a show that comes off as harsh. With their crude and direct sense of humor, it was just a matter of time before they attacked the world of retouching and post production. In a recent episode, they decided to poke fun at the concept of Photoshop and manipulation.

Selfie-off: Kobe Bryant Vs. Lionel Messi

Soccer superstar Lionel Messi and Basketball All-Star Kobe Bryant joined forces once again, and with the help of Turkish Airlines they went on a quest of awesome selfies around the world. When the biggest sports stars in the world compete - it doesn't matter if they compete in soccer, basketball, chess, air hockey or photography - they will give all they have to win. The real winner? Probably Turkish Airlines.

ShittyRigs Reveals Hilarious DIY Side To Hollywood Productions

The majority of successful filmmakers tend to have very similar stories about their humble beginnings. Cheap cameras were often strapped to skateboards or car hoods to emulate the high budget movies or commercials. Professional jibs or sliders were considered a waste of money when there was a perfectly good painter's pole in the garage.

Velcro Man Super Desk By Efficiency Machine

Recently, I started working with a new steadicam operator for my video productions in the New York City area, Kyle. Aside from his upbeat positive demeanor, I noticed that every piece of equipment seemed to be customized with velcro for maximized efficiency. Little did I know, he had started a youtube series called "The Efficiency Machine" showcasing his different velcro-inspired inventions such as his "Super Desk." See below for more examples of his velcro madness/genius.

C.U.N.T.'s Video: Posing for a Photo That's Actually a Video

To promote C.U.N.T. (aka C U Next Tuesday) Sarah Elizabeth Meyler videos Dublin hipsters under the premise that she was taking a photo. The resulting montage of poses is a good chuckle for all of you who have had a long work week followed by a short weekend of more work. Enjoy.

PSA: How To Avoid Deer In The Headlights Syndrome

The Canon 5D Mark II opened a lot of doors to aspiring video shooters like myself. Suddenly filmmakers had access to amazing video quality inside a small DSLR body. Although the compact size of DSLRs is a huge strength it can also be the camera’s biggest obstacle. Often times while shooting with a DSLR, I’ll come across what I lovingly call “Deer In The Headlight Syndrome”.

Pro Photographers Showing How To Shoot Effectively

I thought this was a cool retrospective video that DigitalRev put together using clips from their old episodes of Cheap Camera Challenge. This piece essentially shows how some veteran shooters keep composed when faced with on-set challenges. Everything from face-planting onto concrete while trying to take a photo to dealing with deadly snakes just inches away

Remember that "Constructive" Photo Critique You Made? This is How You Sound

When reading comment sections on photography blogs or on photography groups, I often get the feeling people always think they are better than everyone else. People go on rants with heinously bad comments about photos they don't like and degrade anyone who is creating art that they might not even understand. Many times photographers feel like they give constructive criticism when the opposite is often more true.

Bride Texts During Wedding Ceremony

Cell phones at weddings are getting really obnoxious. "Unplugged weddings" (where all cell phones are confiscated before the event) are becoming very popular these days. I've shot literally hundreds of weddings in my life and cell phones have always been a problem... with the guests. I've never seen this before though.

How to Critique Someone's Work

Hoffer Photography is comprised of Tony and Amy Hoffer, who are amazing wedding photographers located in Philadelphia. Yesterday Tony posted a blog and it wasn't just any blog, it was the best kind: the sarcastic kind. The text caption was "ever since the dawn of the internet, the photography community has been a supportive network that’s willing to forgo their competitive nature and put their egos aside in order to give thoughtful and constructive critique," and I was sold.

Brides Throwing Cats Instead Of The Bouquet of Flowers

About every 6 months we see a new trend happening at weddings. It wasn't long ago that bridal parties were running for their lives while being chased by dinosaurs, or Star Wars AT-AT Walkers among many other things. The latest new trend, thanks to the Tumblr site Brides Throwing Cats, oh and of course a little Photoshop, is replacing the flowers being tossed with a cat. It's so simple, yet genius.

Pop Culture Food Pun Photos You Never Knew Eggsisted

I'm a big fan of clever puns. I'm an even bigger fan of puns done in an original way, which is hard to do these days. The Instagram / Tumblr account "Talking Food" has blended the awesomeness of food photography and pop culture puns like "Go Shawty It's Sherbert Day" and my favorite "Batman and Reuben." If you have a few minutes to kill check out the page for over 100 puns that will put a smile on your face and food that will make you hungry. The most impressive part, the graphic design is all done on an iPhone.

Ever worry that the way you hold your strap makes you look like a tourist? Well, worry no more. Portland based photographer, Jimmy Hickey joins us with his slightly tongue-in-cheek video to teach all photographers how to take great photos and look like a pro while doing it.

LG Unveils New Ultra-Stable Chicken Cam

As cell phone companies continue to improve their cameras, users are finding it increasingly easy to take better photos. Aside from resolution and low light capability, most phones now offer some sort of Automatic Image Stabilization. The technology works by either moving the sensor or lens to counteract unwanted movement before the image is converted to digital information. While some companies struggle to communicate how the image stabilization operates, LG has found a hilarious alternative to technical jargon.

How to Sell Your Old Film Camera for 13 Thousand (Update: Now $92K)

Miley Cyrus is just becoming the talk of the town lately, but the one time she does something completely normal, everyone has to make a big deal out of it. Which is why she posted a plain old Nikon N80 35mm camera on eBay and it's currently up to $13,300 $80,100 $92,000 with plenty of time left to go.

The Most Awkward Wedding Photography Video Ever

As photographers, many of us will do the occasional wedding or two to help supplement income and boost our careers. Wedding photography can be one of the most stressful and challenging aspects of photography, but is often considered the most important because of its purpose. However, how do you handle an awkward situation where you're asked to stop photographing all together, in the middle of a ceremony?

When Was the Last Time You Screwed Up a Shoot?

We're all human and we all screw up. Though, as Photographers, its not always noticeable to those around us. Of course we still notice, whether at the shoot, or after while we're reviewing our images. Here I've collected a bunch of screw up stories from some friends so that maybe next time you can think of these and not feel so bad.
