The Batanes group of Islands sit on the northern most tip of the Philippines. The archipelagic province is 408 miles away from the country's capital of Manila and 120 miles south of Taiwan. At 04:16 AM of July 27, 2019, Batanes was hit by a 5.4 magnitude earthquake followed by another 6.4 at 07:38AM.

A photographer has landed himself in legal trouble after using a photo from free licensing site Unsplash. He was hit with a copyright infringement notice, demanding a fee. Upon trying to find the image again on Unsplash, he discovered it had been removed from the site. 

Instagram has sometimes not been particularly forthright when it comes to decisions of account or content moderation, but that seems to be changing, as the company has announced that they will begin warning users whose accounts are in imminent danger of being banned because of violations. 

One photographer has turned a shipping container into a huge camera, complete with a built-in darkroom. The creation is capable of producing large, traditional analog prints.

DJI, one of the world’s leading drone manufacturers, has formally lodged a complaint against the BBC for a pair of "biased" programs they aired on drone safety. DJI claim the broadcaster included little of the information they provided for the programs, and that the shows were sensationalist by focusing on high-risk incidents like the Gatwick Airport drone crisis.

A lake popular with Instagrammers due to its bright turquoise colors has been revealed as a highly toxic artificial pond used to dump ash from a nearby coal plant. Officials have now issued a warning for people to avoid taking pictures in it due to it being filled with chemicals. 

Instagram has announced two new features aimed at reducing bullying on the platform in what the company claims is a step toward “leading the industry in the fight against online bullying.” 

A pair of British wedding photographers have found themselves called “unprofessional” and “appalling” after declining to work for an influencer for free. A PR rep of the influencer had requested 1,000 photos and two videos, and in return would offer their followers a 25% off the photographers’ services — a discount the photographers don’t even offer. 

Sigma has freshly announced their new camera, which is officially “the world’s smallest and lightest ‘pocketable full-frame’ camera.” It also records 4K video. 

Amateur photographer James Wheeler was looking through Shutterstock, one of the world’s largest stock photo sites, when its “similar images” algorithm began suggesting his own photos to him. It was then he realized his work had been stolen and uploaded by fraudsters.

Prominent photographer Nadav Kander recently found his portrait of David Lynch on the cover of UK magazine The Big Issue. The problem is he never provided the portrait that was used and the image looks to be a photograph of his photograph which was purchased on stock photo site Alamy. 

German lens manufacturer ZEISS has issued an apology to its customers for a recent advert that featured a female model holding one of its recently released lenses.

NASA has released new images, taken in space, showcasing the huge eruption of the Raikoke volcano in Russia over the weekend. The images were captured by astronauts aboard the International Space Station, and were shot using a Nikon D5.

As Canon continues to push ahead with their professional lines, particularly in the full frame mirrorless world, it seems they're also going to be diving into a perhaps unexpected realm: cameras for younger people. Check out the models we might see in the coming months. 

In an all too common occurrence, another photographer has been arrested for filming in a public place, catching the sad event on film. These cases are contentious, and spark vigorous debate. I'm often outraged, but the outrage is tapered when the photographer is being extremely animated and loud about their rights.
