Alligator Juniper, Dusk, Guadalupe Ridge, New Mexico

I had just purchased a Schneider 47XL lens for my 4x5 Toyo camera and wanted to figure it out. So I packed up my truck and drove south to a place I know on the Guadalupe Ridge in the mountains above Carlsbad, New Mexico.
In fact if you take the trail off of this ridge, from this point, you end up in the back country of Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Now that's a rough hike down, and a RUGGED hike back up. As I positioned my camera, and began building a composition I noticed that the moon was rising in the east... perfect! Also the clouds in the sky were moving towards me, so they painted an interesting pattern into the sky. For those that don't use large format cameras like the Toyo, a 47XL lens is right at the edge of what can be used on a 4x5 camera and still have image from edge to edge. I used a Toyo 45A camera, a Schneider 47XL with a #21 filter mounted to the back of the rear lens element and Kodak T-Max 100 film rated at ASA 50. The exposure was 50 seconds at f-11.
