I had gone to Northern New Mexico, New Mexico is the fourth largest state in the U.S. by land mass - BTW, to work in this area. I had seen this from the highway and it was just a few yards from the road so I parked to hike to it. I had no idea what was ahead! The snow was waist deep in areas and I was slogging through it wearing a pair of jeans, hiking boots and a heavy down filled coat with a fleece under it. Needless to say my pants were soaked through with ice and snow and my boots had snow in them. What is crazy is that after I processed the film, and proofed it out it looked more like sea foam than snow against the black soil. I used a Toyo 45A camera with a 65mm Sinaron lens, a #25 filter and the film was Kodak T-Max100. I exposed it at an ASA of 50 so that the shadow areas would retain detail.
BTW, this is very near a place that Georgia O'Keefe painted. She gave it the moniker "The Black Place". There are a lot of oil and coal reserves in the area and the soil is actually almost black
