The Wednesday Rundown 5.26.10

Welcome to the Wednesday Rundown. We recieved a couple of videos from some fstoppers out there, thanks to Yves and the video sent in! This week I was on a mission to find some Polaroid film in NYC. It has recently been put back in production by the Impossible Project. I found their SOHO store and talked with them for a bit. They hooked me up with some film and I am back shooting old school. In honor I have found a behind the scenes shoot with some Polaroid film. Check it out!!! contactfstoppers@gmail.com

How To Survive Technological Changes as an Artist

With new technology being invented seemingly every day with the power to upend our profession, it’s easy to become despondent about the future of our art form. Luckily, there is one fundamental advantage we hold which cannot be engineered out of existence.

Jeremy Cowart Is Going On Tour!

Following the aftermath of the tremendously successful Flash Bus Tour with Joe McNally and David Hobby last year, I can only assume that we will now be seeing many of our other favorite photogs going out on tour in the near future. First on the list is Jeremy Cowart. Jeremy has announced a 3 week, 7 stop tour that INCLUDES a copy of his L I F E F I N D E R DVD and a ticket for a friend that needs it most. All this for $179 ... are you hearing this? The workshop is 8 hours long and you get a copy of his DVD too, insane! I just bought my ticket for December 5th in NYC, so all my NYC photog friends out there better start washing my car and buying me lunch, cuz I have a free ticket to give away ;) Check out the full details and buy your ticket at the tour's website.

The Photographer's Comprehensive Safety Guide to Navigating Deals, Discounts, and Used Offerings This Season

The frenetic final months of the year tempt photographers with screaming deals on cameras, lenses, software, supports, accessories, and more. However, the most tempting bargains also invite increased perils around online fraud, box damage, counterfeit risks, and problematic used gear. As eager shoppers hungry for savings paired with prudent consumers, here is how to diligently navigate both established retailers along with secondary marketplaces to avoid financial headaches and make well-informed purchases.

Photography Can Change the World: Farnaz Damnabi

Can photography change the world? Iranian artist and journalist Farnaz Damnabi's new exhibit, "UNVEILED," set to open at 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS, would seem to suggest yes, at least in part. I don't think it's a surprise to anyone that shifts in power structures can be turbulent. Even minor revisions in social identities can lead to conflict. Damnabi's exhibit is a document of the transformations in the identity, visibility, and recognition of women as equal and free participants in Iran, an unveiling of a new Iran, if you will.

Is Facebook Becoming a Virtual Reality Experience?

Have you ever thought about Facebook as a 3D experience? Engadget reports that at the mostly-annual F8 conference, which showcases what the social media giant has in store for the future, announcers introduced a new way users will be able to capture their images in 3D and also experience past images in a virtual reality setting.

New Ohio Law Requires Parental Consent for Minors on Social Media

The Wednesday Rundown 3.31.10

Hello this is Jerrit Pruyn from Fstoppers with.... you guessed it, another Wednesday Rundown. While Patrick and Lee are out in Colorado filming another Fstoppers Original, I figured I'd feature some of the best videos sent in by our readers. This week we have a little salsa dancing going on and even some muscle cars burning out. Big thanks to the people at Wonderful Machine and the videos they rounded up online. Keep sending in your video links to contactfstoppers@gmail.com and maybe next week you will find yourself on Fstoppers! Drop me some comments if you like what you see and remember to tell your friends to start filming all their photoshoots so I can post them.

Ryan Hughes Shoots A Video With The 10FPS 1D Mark 3

So this is really cool. Ryan Hughes was in film; then he got into still photography; and now he is blurring the mediums together. Watch Ryan explain how he shot his latest short "RGB MOVE" below and then watch the final product in the full post.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

One of our readers sent us this crazy video that must have been shot 40 years ago because I don't recognize any of this technology. Apparently it was really popular back in the day and I think I've even seen some kids carrying these as they left a local Urban Outfitters. If only they could make one of these that uses both Polaroid film and a memory card maybe I could experiment with one. Apparently the creator of this video didn't watch our previous videos on enjoyable audio :( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jaiq_ZZ_eM<
Charles Brooks: Architecture in Music Interview

Jumping back to an article I just wrote on how to speed up your career by 10 years, We Eat Together suggested “finding your passion and photographing the hell out of it.” That is what exactly New Zealand-based photographer Charles Brooks did in his recent photo series, Architecture in Music.

Rising Above the Noise: Why Ignoring Social Media Trolls Is the Best Strategy

In the ever-expanding landscape of social media, where voices echo and opinions clash, trolls have become an unfortunate reality. These internet provocateurs thrive on negative attention, seeking to disrupt, demean, and derail meaningful discussions. However, instead of getting caught in their web of negativity, there are compelling reasons why ignoring social media trolls is not only wise but also empowering. In this article, let's explore why rising above the noise and refusing to engage with trolls can lead to a healthier, more positive online experience.

[Video] 2 Months Left To Enter This Years Biggest Photo/Video Contest

Our 2011 Behind The Scenes Contest ends on December 31st which gives you a little less than 2 months to submit your video. I want to make it very clear that you SHOULD NOT wait until the 31st to submit your video because something will go wrong; it always does. Plus, videos submitted early will be posted to the front of Fstoppers and many that come in at the last minute will not get the same exposure. Stay tuned until the end of this video for a little "surprise" for all of you gear heads out there.

NYC Photography Party This Saturday: Location Changed

As you guys have heard, we are throwing another party for photographers in NYC this Saturday and we are already expecting a great group of shooters. Due to the football game on Saturday we have decided to move the party around the block to "Las Chicas Locas" at 160 West 25th Street. The owner is reserving the bar/restaurant just for us, so let's pack it out. Everyone is welcome no matter what level you are currently at. The party begins at 8pm.
Photographers Take the Day Off, Happy Festivus!

With the holidays upon us, many photographers (including myself) will want to break out all their gear. In years past I have always planned on what cameras and lens combos to bring, lights, possible modifiers, batteries, and everything in between to photograph Christmas. This year I took on a new approach. An iPhone and a cheap stand set in the corner in time-lapse mode would be the only media I walked away with this year.

Flickr Updates iPhone And iPod Touch App

If you're an iPhone or iPod Touch user, you'll be happy to hear that Flickr has updated their app with some great new functionality. With a built-in editor, instant sharing on multiple social platforms, and a slick exploration interface, they're making a great mobile Flickr experience. And while Flickr's past iPhone and iPod Touch apps might have left you wanting more, I think this is one worth checking out.

Monument Valley Timelapse With Philip Bloom

Philip Bloom is an amazing British DP, Director, and Film Maker who also works hard to bring us some neat gadget to use out in the field when filming DSLR video. When I saw this timelapse video of Monument Valley out in Utah, I knew this BTS video/audio would appeal to our landscape photographers who are often stuck watching fashion and commercial videos. So in an effort to change it up a bit, go ahead and load both the audio and video tracks (hit play and then pause) and start with the audio track. Philip also outlines a lot of the gear used in this timelapse over at his blog so check that out too. Enjoy Monument Valley commentary by PhilipBloom

Fstoppers Welcomes Klaus!

This week we are going to be featuring some of our favorite BTS videos submitted to our Behind the Scenes Contest that ends this Saturday! When this video from photographer Klaus (if he really even is a photographer) was posted on our Forum, it sparked up a lot of dialog. It may not be the most complicated photoshoot or even the most educational but it is the most fun and entertaining photoshoot of all of the contest entries. Photography and photographers need a sense of humor and this video accomplishes just that. Hope you guys enjoy and make sure you have your videos completed and posted by Saturday night! <
Don’t Be Afraid to Say No to Work

Starting a freelance career might be one of the most stressful things a human can do to themselves. I am exaggerating, but you get my point. Naturally, your first instinct might be to start chasing every client possible and get as many jobs as possible. Here is why you should stop doing this and focus on something else.

Assets On Demand: Introducing Requests From Motion Array

Motion Array has been hard at work adding new features recently. For example, they recently came out with a video portfolio site builder. With this feature, any paid subscriber can create a custom site to show their video work, complete with text, images, and contact information (all editable). Users can even use their own custom domain or have one supplied by Motion Array. But now, Motion Array is at it again with Requests. Essentially, any paid member of the Motion Array community can put in a request for any type of creative asset that Motion Array offers.

Photo Editing by Voice? Apple Is Working on It

Recently, we've seen a lot of AI used in image creation, but so far, we haven't seen it as strongly applied to image editing instead of widespread image creation.

You Have Less Than 30 Days To Book The Fstoppers Workshop

On May 28th - June 1st Fstoppers is hosting our first ever photography workshop in the Bahamas at Atlantis Resort. We signed a contract with the resort which guaranteed our attendees the cheapest possible hotel rates. After fees, the cheapest room at the resort is usually over $450. The attendees of our workshop pay less than $200/room and they can be shared at no extra cost. Sadly there is a catch.
