2.41 - "Needs Work"

Exactly one week before Christmas in Northern Canada brought temperatures of -40. But Amanda—a circus performer by trade—still wanted to do a shoot. Outside.

So I brought all my lights and we found a deserted road about 15 minutes outside of town to watch the sunset.

I set up my battery powered Alien Bees and ... nothing. Too cold for the bees to function. Sigh. So I set up my pocket strobes (at the time, a couple Canon 430s, IIRC). And again, nothing.

So, while I could shoot the scene silhouetted, I wanted to have a few photos with her lit up.

But the only light source I had was the headlights on our vehicles. So we parked one on each side. But Neither car was very big, and I needed enough light to both stop the action and balance with the sunset behind her, so the cars were parked quite close, which meant the lights were lighting up her waist. So she squatted while playing with her silk veil fans while I rattled off a bunch of shots, capturing this.

My fingers refused to talk to me until sometime right after Christmas, but otherwise, everyone survived the shoot without incident.
