Photographing food for a new restaurant in San Diego, the chef/owner wanted a shot of a dish that had a garnish of truffle shavings. After capturing that image, I suggested that we do a version with a truffle shaving falling toward the dish. Well - truffles don't really fall from the shaver voluntarily, so after multiple attempts where the shavings just stuck to the shaver and had to be shaken off, I decided to do a comp. I shot the dish by itself, another exposure of the hand and shaver, then removed the dish and shot a truffle shaving by itself suspended on a toothpick which was hand-held by an assistant. I comped it together in Photoshop. I used the same lighting for all exposures - Elinchrom One with a Rotalux 39" Octa from the right and a small white card on the left. Shot with a Nikon Z8 with their fabulous 24-120mm f/4 S. Settings were 1/60 sec @ f/11 @ 52mm. Cannot recall what the power setting was on the One.
