Having recently moved from a DSLR into medium format digital, I can affirm the transition isn't a cheap one. Besides shelling out tens-of-thousands of dollars for a body and digital back, you've also got to buy a new set of lenses which average around $4k each. Add tether cables, tripod mounts, additional batteries, and filters, you're in the hole for the equivelent of a home mortgage.

B&H is running some really great deals on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, which has to be the deal of the year so far. The camera is being marked down by the manufacturer to 50% off, making it really difficult to pass on it. 

We said it was coming, and now it's here: Nikon Capture NX-D is available for download completely free of charge. If you're a Nikon shooter just starting out and don't have anyting you love for RAW processing, it certainly doesn't hurt to give this a try. 

While the beta has been out since February and can still be downloaded here, according to a June 26th press release, Nikon will be releasing its new Capture NX-D software July 15th for free. The previous version of Capture NX-2 still goes for $140, so it's nice to see more value added to Nikon's products for us Nikonians out there.

Today Canon announced a new Dropbox-like service for hosting images online. During development the service was cryptically called Project1709, now given the name Irista (according to CNET, that's pronounced eye-RIST-ta). The new service is stumping many as it doesn't appear to do much, if any, more than Dropbox and its ilk.

In fact, RenderMan has been around since 1984 - used to render computer graphics in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.

Some may have noticed a good portion of the DIY and Kickstarter projects for film photography revolve around the 4x5 format. That's likely because, for lovers of film, it's the best format out there. The negative size allows for incredibly sharp and enlarged prints. It's possible (just) to handhold a 4x5 camera for street photography.

In case you didn't know, the Nikon and Canon rebates are ending in two days and I've been told with absolute certainty that at least the Nikon ones won't be extended. Also, B&H has a small number of D800s in stock that have been refurbished by Nikon for $2400. Not a bad deal if you've been lusting for the Nikon flagship camera.

If you are a Google+ fan like myself, you may have gotten a nice email recently in regards to the Auto-Backup feature which is now going to allow full size images and video to be stored.

Though the lens doesn't have the best performance if stopped down more than f/10, the 40mm pancake has grown to be one of my favorite lenses, especially in tandem with my 70D (which is also on sale today for $300 off).
