2.21 - "Needs Work"

This photograph captures the essence of Manikarnika Ghat, the most sacred cremation ground in Varanasi. Steeped in mythology, it is believed that those who are cremated here attain Moksha—freedom from the eternal cycle of birth and rebirth. The flames at this ghat never cease, signifying the continuous journey of souls.

The rituals are carried out by the Doms, a community entrusted with performing the final rites. Their leader, known as the Dhom Raja, holds a significant yet paradoxical position in society. Despite the title "Raja" (King), their work involves dealing with death in its rawest form—lighting pyres and managing the last passage of life.

Adding to this profound contrast, there are those who clean the remains, collecting ashes and remnants of cremated bodies. While their role is crucial in completing the cycle, it remains one of the most challenging and often disregarded tasks.

This image is more than a visual representation—it is a window into the deep spiritual and social complexities of life and death in India.
