During my days as a Navy Photojournalist I shot this photograph of the battleship USS Iowa (BB-61) shooting a broadside as it trained in the Caribbean in 1984. The first challenge was to get permission from the captain of the ship to be on the bow of the ship for the broadside. Once permission was granted I went to the bow and decided what focal length lens to use on my non-motorized Nikon FM loaded with Kodachrome 64. Along with ear plugs in my ears I also had headphones on that monitored a voice circuit which allowed me to hear the count down. As the count went down I gently pressed the shutter release half way. The resultant boom of the 16" guns startled me into pressing the shutter. One chance, one frame at 1/125th of a second at f/8.
