NY Times Photoshops Fashion Model - Says Readers Understand It's Fantasy

The New York Times is being forced to examine their policy in regards to retouching on their images. Of course, they stand by the fact that manipulation of their news images "strictly forbidden.” But recently, they received backlash when the cover of their [style] magazine T had what many readers felt was a fashion model that looked 'shockingly thin' and 'underage.'

Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Goes on Record With His Hate for ‘Fat Chicks’

Abercrombie & Fitch has developed themselves into a household name in the fashion industry with their sexy lifestyle-sque advertisement photography and affordable clothing. However, a recent discovery shows that A&F no longer carries XL or XXL sized womens clothing in their stores. The reason for this is because they want “thin and beautiful customers” and that “fat chicks will just never be a part of the 'in' crowd.”

"Take My Picture" How Fashion Photography Has Changed

Behind The Scenes: Creating A 1930s-Themed Fashion Shoot In Detroit

Detroit-based fashion photographer Paul Manoian recently released this informative (and cold!) BTS video of him shooting models using vintage automobiles, clothing, and styling. Paul touches on what he does to keep a shoot running smoothly, especially in below-freezing weather: keeping the crew and models fed and happy, moving quickly between locations, and having a clear idea of what you want to accomplish. The final images are pretty incredible, if I say so myself. Goes to show what you can accomplish with a dedicated team and a clear end goal in mind.

Victoria's Secret Revealed - Unretouched vs. Retouched Photos

Lindsay Adler Shoots Her "Chroma" Fashion Editorial

A lot of times on FStoppers we see shoots that are very gear focused, after all that's what we're here for isn't it? We tend to focus on shoots that have some sort of technical wizardry behind them, but sometimes it's best to strip away all of the extras and focus on what you're shooting. In this video Lindsay Adler takes us through a very cool fashion shoot that is lit very simply using only a beauty dish and a small silver reflector.

Portraits and Projection Mapping in Fashion Photography

We've seen behind the scenes videos of how projection mapping can be used artistically and commercially. Tobias Bjorkgren takes on a slightly different angle and applies the concept to his latest fashion shoot. The use of projection allows him to stand his models in front of varying scenes without having to leave the studio. To see the final images, check out his blog. What do you think of the effect?

[Behind The Scenes Video] The Making Of A Cover Shot With Supermodel Coco Rocha

You might remember Coco Rocha from her past ELLE controversy that we recently posted. She's definitely one of the industry's top models. [BTS] Guess Jeans Spring/Summer Photoshoot

So this video is mostly just absurdly attractive people having their pictures taken, but this video really gives you a great idea as to how big the scale of these productions are. They also seem to be using a lot of natural light for these shoots, which is kind of amazing.

[Video] Etnies' Aimless - Behind the Scenes

"Public Domaine" was the name of a skateboarding themed art exhibition that took place at The Gaîté Art Museum in Paris last summer. To celebrate their 25th Anniversary, shoemaker Etnies commissioned award-winning skateboard filmmaker Mike Manzoori to create a unique piece of video art for the exhibit. And unique is exactly what he provided with a bizarrely super wide angle aspect ratio film that was projected on the walls of the exhibit. He also used some very interesting tools to achieve this look, including the RED One, Custom rigs for holding 3x DSLRs, and a spinning 360 GoPro Rig. To see the full post click here.

The Wednesday Rundown 11.16.11

Howdy and welcome to the Wednesday Rundown. This weekend I had the chance to sneak into an old abandon mental hospital. It was pretty crazy how easy it was to simply open the door and enter. I didn't even have to get by a fence to get into this place. I was inspired to find some photo shoots done in this type of environment. Enjoy! [Picture] Please Photographers, Stop Wearing Fanny Packs

As photographers, we have the coolest job in the world don't we? There is one thing that is the opposite of cool though. It is the fanny pack wearing photographer. Yes, I know you it might be convenient, but please, just use a normal bag. If you like wearing your gear then I would highly suggest a shoulder bag or a backpack. Anything but a fanny pack.

Basketball Never Stops: Filming A Nike Commercial With Only One Light

If you were approached by a big client and asked to only shoot with one light, would you freak out or would you make the most of the situation? In Nike's latest basketball commercial Basketball Never Stops, they only used one single hard light to tell the story how the game and fans go on even after the court lights turn off. I think videos like this are a great reminder that sometimes less is more. Sometimes a simple setup can still produce dramatic results (even if you have you substitute a helicopter for a lightstand). Check out the video below and click the full post to see a short Behind The Scenes video on the making of this latest Nike Ad.
Does Adidas Use Too Many Lights For Their Ad Campaigns?

A big part of what makes commercial photography so interesting is it often requires photographers to incorporate the latest graphic trends into their work. In other words, in order to cut the mustard in commercial photography, you not only have to be at the top of your game but you also have to produce something eye catching in a market full of interesting media. That's exactly what photographer Gary Land did with his latest Adidas ad featuring soccer superstar Lionel Messi. However, his arsenal of Profoto lights and heavy photoshop has caused a bit of controversy over on the Strobist website where many photographers are claiming the final image is a bit overkill. I personally love the final image and think the direction Gary went is exactly what separates the boys from the men. However, I can appreciate the purists point of view who think great advertising photos should remain true to real life and capture a more realistic vision. Check out this great behind the scenes video of the latest Adidas shoe ad and let us know what you think in the comments. Check out Gary's interesting website as well for more inspiration.

Today "The iPhone Fashion Shoot" Is 1 Year Old

On July 4th last year Patrick and I published "The iPhone Fashion Shoot" and we wondered if anyone would like it. At the time Fstoppers.com was reaching about 700 photographers per day. To our surprise, websites around the world started sharing the video immediately and on July 5th we got over 23,000 visitors. Fstoppers was actually getting so much traffic that we couldn't edit anything or make a new post for 3 days because our server kept crashing. Although we made this silly video half as a joke, it really made Fstoppers.com what it is today because the popularity from this single video was enough to gain thousands of loyal readers. It's fun to look back but it also makes me wonder.... what in the world can I do to top it?
The Wednesday Rundown 6.8.11

BTS Of Nike Chosen Campaign: Extreme Sports At Night

I just ran across an incredible ad by Nike called "Nike Chosen." The concept was to grab the best surfers, snowboarders, skaters, motocross, and BMX riders and film them doing their thing at night. The BTS footage (that can be found in the full post) is not as informative as I would like but if you pay attention to the details, there is a lot to be learned. The lighting, especially for the surfing session, is really amazing and although you may not ever do a shoot of this size, the same techniques could be used for your still photography at night.

Behind The Scenes With Fashion Photographer Mario Testino

Most guys are drawn to fashion photography for the over the top concepts and beautiful women. The issue is that most of these men will never truly gain an interest for fashion and sadly, shooting a pretty girl isn't really "fashion photography" at all. Mario Testino is to many, the top fashion photographer in the world. Testino rarely allows cameras to roll while he shoots but in these three videos we can get a glimpse of what a true fashion photographer is. Check out the full post for the other two videos.

This months Fstoppers Photoshop contest is all about helping Noam Galai (The Stolen Scream).
